Every version of this route starts the same way: not with a mountain pass, but with a set of keys changing hands at a workshop in Munich.
The handover, not a formality
The Porsche fleet handover happens at the Munich workshop — the cars are prepped, checked, and handed over one by one, with enough time built in that nobody’s rushed through the walk-around before pulling onto the road for the first time. This part of the day is deliberately unglamorous: it’s the last moment before a week of mountain passes and spa hotels, and it’s built to be calm rather than rushed, because a driver who’s still getting used to an unfamiliar car shouldn’t also be racing a clock.
The first drive: southbound, deliberately manageable
From Munich, the route runs south with a coffee stop along the way — a genuine break, not a photo-op pretending to be one, and a chance for a driver still learning the car’s specific feel to settle in before the road starts asking more of them. The crossing into Tirol follows, and it’s here that the route’s actual character starts to show: the flat approach roads give way to the first real elevation change, mountains rising on both sides well before the day’s driving is done.
Arrival: Austria’s most legendary spa hotel
The day ends at Interalpen-Hotel Tirol, widely considered Austria’s most legendary spa hotel — the property that sets the tone for the rest of the week’s evenings, covered in full in the route’s spa-culture piece. Dinner is in-house, and after a first day of handover logistics and a genuinely new drive, most guests describe it as exactly the right note to end on — impressive without being the day’s main event, since the main event is still to come.
Why the route starts here, and not with the hardest driving
Day 1 is intentionally lighter than what follows. Timmelsjoch, Grossglockner, and the rest of the week’s technical alpine passes are still ahead — Day 1’s job is a clean handover and a manageable first drive, not front-loading the hardest driving before anyone’s had a chance to get comfortable in an unfamiliar car. It’s a deliberate pacing decision, not a lack of ambition.
